“Angam” the movie

August 21, 2011 in Ancient Sri Lanka, Sinhala, Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Martial Arts, Sri Lankan Movies

We have paid special attention to Angam Pora, ancient  martial arts in Sri Lanka. Today we are going to look into the upcoming documentary movie “Angam”. First of all I should thank Mr Anjula Rasanga Weerasinghe for providing all the information and images.

“Angam” the movie

The documentary film “Angam”, which tells a story about the Sri Lankan traditional martial art “Angampora” will be screening at Goethe Institute Colombo 7 on 7th and 9th September 2011. Initial screening on the 7th September,2011 will be limited only to invitees and the public screening will be on 9th September, 2011 at 6.00pm. There will be no-charge for the public screening entrance.

This film will be taking you through the origin of Angamora, which will be enriched with amazing facts on the history of our nation and folk stories of it’s’ evolvement. There are fascinating and exciting demonstrations that will entrance the audience and discussions about the present situation and how the future lies for this unique art form. Directed as a feature documentary, “Angam” The Movie is an hour and 10mintues of a summarization on our historic martial arts.

“Angam” The Movie, features veteran Angampora masters like G. Karunapala, Dr. Wikramasinghe and Athula Nandasena along with renowned archaeologist Dr. Siran Deraniyagala who will also take you through some marvelous findings about the Sri Lankan history which will inspire you to re-investigate our history and culture. Further the angampora guru’s and their students showcase how they practice and take forward this traditional martial art to our future generations, not only in Sri Lanka but to the world.

“With our gained experiences over the time and our successful attempts at few short films, we felt the need of doing a feature film or a full length documentary. Based on that, we started developing various story lines, researches and script writing. Through time we met a group of individuals via a social network site, namely Face book, and YouTube, who are not only involved in protecting an endangered martial art which is very unique to our country but successfully promoting it locally and internationally. Through time we started our researches and fact findings, which made us feel we could lay the foundations for a feature documentary on this unique art form, which is definitely in need of being in the light. “Angam” The Movie is the result of that effort and the relationship build over the time.” said the Director, Anjula Rasanga.

“Angam” The Movie, is Produced and Directed by Anjula Rasanga Weerasinghe, Edited by Amila Akalpa Perera with Anuradha Jayasuriya’s Cinematography, Eranga Hemajith as the Asst Director and Lalindra Amarasekara being the Music Composer / Co Producer. This is the first feature length Documentary film experiment of the film makers, whom have been previously involved in couple of short films, advertising and TV programs. “Angam” documentary film was produced under very tight or no financial backup and very limited technical resources.

Furthermore, Anjula Rasanga explained his ulterior motive of making “Angam” The Movie as, “Time is such where except for Cricket and very limited number of occasions, the image of our country is set to be very negative in international community. Even in a situation like that, it was fascinating to see how “Angam” has brought these people from all corners of the world together irrespective of languages, race or religions and making a good impression internationally about Sri Lanka . What we tried through “Angam” the movie is to take this unique form of martial art and our heritage to the world.

I must mention that there are veteran Angampora masters spread out in Sri Lanka who are in their old ages, like over 80years of age but still carry on with this martial art form. My teams’ ulterior motive through “Angam” The Movie is that it will be an eye-opener for the society and would make the society to take initiative in protecting as well as cultivating Angam and its veteran followers.”

Executive Producer and Director, Anjula Rasanga, wrote and drew original comic books for friends during his school days and moved on his passion towards film making later on. After working in marketing & advertising industry he released his first short film “Valantine Crush(ed!)” in 2009 by collaborating with couple of friends, which was also featured by 20th Century Fox search labs, Bonsoir Film Festival and Tasveer Seattle. He also contributed to W.D Amaradeva’s Mandoharp short documentary in 2010. “Angam” the movie is also one of his own initiatives and the first feature length documentary film produced & directed by him.

Amila Akalpa and the director Anjula Rasanga has been learning and working together for the last 5 years and together have done couple of online videos, stop motions and short films including the short “Valentine Crush (ed!)”. Akalpa is a canny editor, with a touch of classiness and an amazing dedication towards the project and currently he is working as a commercial editor
The skillful eye behind the camera, Anuradha Jayasuriya is the most experienced film maker in the team. Anuradha has been performing many roles in the local industry from being the cinematographer to sounds engineer on many feature films, documentaries, music videos and TV programs over many years. He was the trustful eye behind the camera for the prestigious French TV magazine BONSOIR for the last few years.
Eranga Hemajith, the Asst Director and the Co-Producer, is a poet, writer and a researcher. He has an undying thirst to dig in to local culture and history. He took the lead in doing the research collecting information about Angampora before we started the project and performed his duty as a co producer / asst director for “Angam” the movie. He is also the author of the blog “Puskole” which has gained thousands of active readers over a very short period of time span.
Music Composer and Co-Producer, Lalindra Amarasenkara, has his skills span from being a theater producer, events manager, technician, musician, and software developer, designer to a business leader. His collaborative work in the advertising industry has won many prestigious international awards and even represented Young Lions Films category from Sri Lanka at the Cannes Lions Festival in France. This talented guy is the one who composed the music track for “Angam” the movie.

It was the teams’ high enthusiasm, the “never-say-die” attitude and every form of encouragement they got from their friends & family, which enabled the near-impossible task to be a reality and end up with a documentary film of this scale. Furthermore, on behalf of his team, Anjula would like to especially like thank Mr. Marsh Dodanwala and Ms. Anoma Rajakaruna for their invaluable support, their well wishers and members of their families.

ANGAMPORA – The Greatest Martial Art of Ancient Sri Lanka part 2

November 26, 2010 in Ancient Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Martial Arts

It is always interesting to talk about ancient Sri Lanka. History is always been a mystery and  it is base on what we heard and read. Recently I have seen a trend(In Good Way) that many start to talk openly about great King Sri Ravana. It is different to the history me and you learnt in school. But that makes more sense.

According to the history we learnt Sri Lankan civilization start from King Vijaya who came from India. Eventhough we did not argue when we are at school (because we did not know much I guess) it left lot of unsolved mysteries. I thinks this is the same story not only in Sri Lanka but all over the world. Whoever will tell you the story that they want you to listen but it dose not need to be the actual truth. I am not going to talk about this as this argument will not make any good to any of us.

This is about a great martial art of ancient Sri Lanka, Angampora. I think only handful of people knew about Angampora before the tele drama “Dhadubasnamanaya”, story base on this martial art. Everyone thought it was wiped out of the country and no one knew about it any more.  Two to three years ago I searched about it and I could not find much information about it. But, today you can find lots of information sites, videos and even Angmapora classes. Is this good or bad? I will let you decide. Truth is any martial art if you really want to master it you need to do lot of sacrifices.

Here are some really informative sites I have came a cross about Angampora.

Angampora Blog – Where you can find lots of Angampora demonstrations.
Angam Martial Arts of Sri Lanka – Good website with some interesting information and if you are in Sri Lanka you can even attend classes.
Angam Pora My space and facebook pages.

Dont forget it is Ángampora is not just a way to fight. There are lot more involved in it. So share your thoughts and what you know about Angampora.
